How to Approach Transferring Schools We all hope that well get our college decision right on the first try. Obviously, thats the ideal way to do it. Spending months agonizing over applications, personal essays, waiting for those big envelopes in the mail, and looking over every college review site out there you dont want to have to do that again. Transferring schools usually isnt in your four-year plan as you prepare for your university adventure as a freshman but it can happen, and usually when its the farthest idea from your mind. There are a number of reasons this can happen. Perhaps you werent thorough enough on your campus visit or perhaps you didnt make a visit at all. Maybe you didnt do enough research on the availability of academic opportunities you desire or the kind of town atmosphere you want. Realizing halfway through your freshman year that you are not getting the kind of experience you need is never a fun feeling, but its better to recognize and admit it at that point rather than staying in denial and getting cheated out of the college experience you deserve. Also, sometimes circumstances out of your control can come into play and drive you to transferring. Its very possible that you did do all the necessary prep-work to make an informed decision about the college you would attend, but you ended up not being comfortable with any of your peers. Different schools do attract different people and sometimes you just may not find yourself fitting in as well as you would have hoped. And that doesnt always mean youre not trying hard enough or not utilizing enough of the readily available social opportunities unfortunately, sometimes things just dont work out. Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, social aspects are a very important part of college, and how can you be happy living on your own if you do not have some sort of support system physically there by your side? A particular environment may not be right for you specifically and if you accept that and believe you are not at fault, then you will be on a healthy track to make the infamous transfer. Now, this all leads up to why transferring can be good. Its very refreshing and comforting to know you have a second chance at the awesome college experience youve dreamed of. You can start all over, meet new people, live in a new place, try new things. Plus, now that you have some of the college experience under your belt, you arent a totally blind freshman who is completely unaware of how things work. You will have some good background about college life to make sure you do it right this time. However, you cannot be nave and think acclimating to a new college in your second or third year will be as easy as going to a new college as a freshman was. Universities make the first few weeks of school a social haven for freshmen, creating orientations and events that are specifically catered to that incoming class. This time, you are not a part of that brand new group you are just a brand new individual, alone. Granted, many students transfer to schools where they already know someone, and that certainly makes the transition a lot smoother. But if you are going into this without knowing a soul, be prepared to work a little harder at breaking into the social scene and learning about the environment around you. Its so easy to get scared by this prospect and just decide to tolerate your original school. But think of it this way is it better to be miserable at a school youre safely familiar with or to nervously put forth some extra effort to get to know a new one? You deserve another chance. You deserve the best college experience you can have. Maybe transferring will make you a little uncomfortable initially, but that wont last forever whereas staying at the first school that you hated, might. Which path will leave you happiest at graduation? Thats the path you want to go on, the path that will end with no regrets.

The Civil War, a conflict whose death toll was unprecedented at that time, necessitated the creation of national cemeteries. It became an unofficial tradition for certain towns to commemorate fallen soldiers through special tributes in the spring. General John A. What was your favorite moment from working  with students? One of my students looked up at me and smiled when I told her she was ready to move on into a new curriculum notebook.   She said: Im the smartest person in the world because of you Ms. Amelia. Im even smarter than you now.' What is one thing you and your students  have in common? My students and I love pink, purple and EVERYTHING girly. What would you tell someone who is  thinking about becoming a volunteer? Heart is only an hour  commitment, but in that small time frame you have a huge impact with the kids in the classroom and socially. Why did you become a tutor? My faith leads me to believe we should be active participants in the world around us. The world would be a better place if we all looked outside of ourselves and helped our fellow brothers and sisters. Both of Amelia’s students have made great progress this year. Amelia’s 1st grade student started the year learning to count accurately, and she is now learning to add and subtract up to 20  â€" grade level material! Private Tutoring at Home - How to Study Tips BobbiM Sep 26, 2015 Yes, we all have more electronic gadgets than we can possible use in one day let alone at one time.  And there are very few of us that cant navigate around a keyboard.  However, when you are trying to study and learn a new topic your handwritten notes and study sheets are going to help you more than anything that youve typed. For whatever reason, one of the best ways to learn how to study is by taking pen or pencil to paper and writing out anything and everything related to your coursework, text or exam.  Theres something about that flow as I call it that makes your brain absorb and store what you are working on as well as learning at the time. So simply grab some paper, note cards, index cards and even sticky notes and use those to collect the main points or topics for whatever you are going to be writing or studying.  This extra effort even if your computer, phone or tablet are near at hand will benefit you more than you know and your grades will also reflect that as well.  And for those whose handwriting is tough, write it out once and then type it up into notes.  Or use a tablet like the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro    that comes with a stylus and can translate your handwriting into typed notes for you.  Its a more expensive option but effective as well. As weve said before, if you do this throughout the semester or year, youll be ready when exams or finals come around.  You wont have to cram or stay up for all nighters (unless you want to of course) trying to get prepped in time. 3 Tips On Writing About Heavy Subjects ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog A college essay does not have to be about an important topic â€" cancer, death, poverty, etc. â€" basically, the Worst Thing That’s Ever Happened To You Or Anyone Anywhere. It has to be important to you, but not by definition heavy or serious. However, sometimes a major world issue or a personal tragedy is vital to understanding you and your worldview. It’s understandable to want to share that with an admissions committee. If you truly want to write about something serious, here are some tips on how to handle it. Keep the focus on how YOU relate to the topic at hand Discuss major issues in the context of you and your life story. It can be difficult to have any sort of meaningful dialogue about such topics as war or racism in approximately 650 words. Narrow your focus down to a specific time or event when your life was personally affected by such an issue. Describe how it made you feel, what your reaction was, and how you have grown as a person as a result of going through the experience. Providing relevant (the key being relevant, not “every sordid”), specific details will be the key to keeping your college essay from feeling generic or superficial. Ultimately, the point of the essay is to give a little insight into an applicant as an individual. Don’t waste the opportunity by pontificating on ending world hunger without relating it back to exactly why it’s a goal of yours and what you plan to do about it. Explain your transformation as a result of the issue All college essays should have some sort of narrative arc to them, but it’s especially important if you are using a Major Life Tragedy as the backbone of your essay. There needs to be a significant transformation between You Before and You After this event. Show how going through what you have has made you a better, stronger, and wiser person. What do you appreciate now? What changes have you made to your behavior and lifestyle? What lessons have you taken from the experience? In order to make your essay about tragedy feel essential, you must be able to employ distance and perspective so you can reflect on the changes you’ve made externally or internally since the tragedy occurred. If you don’t have distance from the event yet or are still struggling with its effect on your life, it might not be the right topic choice. Think about what you want the Admissions Committee to understand about you by telling this story Just having experienced something horrible in your life doesn’t mean that a college owes you any sort of opportunity. Exploiting your personal or family tragedy to elicit sympathy can make you seem like a victim, instead of someone who has dealt with adversity in his or her life and who has continued to persevere in spite of it. What makes your tragedy pertinent to your college admissions process is in describing how far you have come from that low point, and how you will continue to grow in college. Some topics are controversial, uncomfortable, and frankly, irrelevant to whether you’ll succeed in college. Think long and hard about whether the subject you’re considering is something you want to share with the Admissions Committee. It also may not be the best use of your personal statement, but rather as a supplemental statement to explain poor performance or excessive absences.
